Membership of the Herts and Beds club includes access to our comprehensive lending library. As well as the opportunity to try expensive items before buying, many of our friendly members have experience using the equipment featured in the library, and will gladly help you get started using it. Herts & Beds members have recently helped shape the Men’s Shed Health & Safety Policy, Handbook, Machine Familiarization and User Sign-Off process. This work aims to create a safer environment and build a safety-first culture where everyone looks out for one another.
Both Herts & Beds and Shed’s primary objective is to provide a safe and supportive environment for inexperienced users. Using various sources, including AWGB and manufacturers’ guidance, we have created reusable documents that can be adapted for high-risk machines such as bandsaws and lathes.
These are available here:
Each assessment follows a standard framework of topics to cover, machine features, setup, use (for basic techniques) and maintenance. The use of advanced techniques for new projects will require a further assessment . Safety of the user and bystanders is the assessments' primary objective; it seeks to achieve that by the user following the document and making them aware of what's required to use the machine safely and produce better results.
The documents are now being used in the Man's Shed, as a guide to tutor and then assess both understanding and use of the machine, before they are "authorized" to use it. H&BW members can use it to assess themselves.
The document is a familiarization guide; Herts & Beds accepts no responsibility for its use.
The User takes full responsibility for using the machine.
