We are a well-established club with over 90 members. We meet on the second Tuesday of each month at Adeyfield Community Centre in Hemel Hempstead. Meetings begin at 7.30pm and we aim to conclude by 10.15pm. The hall is accessible to wheelchairs. We do ask that for health and safety reasons that under 16’s are accompanied by a responsible adult. The club was started in 1988 by a handful of likeminded turners to share enjoyment of their hobby and to develop individual skills. Membership has grown steadily and with larger premises at Adeyfield we now have capacity for up to 100 members on club nights.
We are affiliated to the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain (AWGB). The AWGB is an international non-profit making organisation dedicated to the advancement and promotion of woodturning. Currently the AWGB has 131 affiliated and associated clubs, and in excess of 3000 individual members. We are proud to be part of the AWGB.
I inherited the turning bug from my father, who was an apprenticed carpenter and joiner by trade and he always owned a lathe. As a boy I watched, learned and was occasionally allowed to have a go. Later in life, I did not follow in his footsteps, but became an accountant instead. Then, when dad passed, I inherited his Union Graduate lathe and all his turning tools. So, I decided to remedy my lifelong neglect of the craft of woodturning and have not regretted one moment of my journey thus far.
I joined Herts and Beds Woodturners in 2017 and have been on the committee from 2019. In 2023 I became Chairman and am fortunate to follow in the most capable footsteps of Tim Pettigrew and prior to him, Tony Taylor. They led the growth of the club to its current size and activities and guided it through the pandemic years. They built an excellent and hardworking committee, and with its support my aim is to continue to grow the club and to secure its future.
